„VOLVO ADVENTURE” 2010-11 Project

KARINTHYS DIÁKOK ORSZÁGOS SIKERE

A „VOLVO ADVENTURE”, az ENSZ és a Volvo Autógyár közös nemzetközi környezetvédelmi versenye, melyre 13-16 éves diákok pályázhattak helyi környezetvédelmi probléma feltárásával, akcióterv kidolgozásával és megvalósításával. A pályázatok többfordulós zsűrizése után országonként a legjobb csapat jut tovább a svédországi döntőre, melyre a Föld minden tájáról érkeznek diákok.

A projekt címe: „Loyal to Local – Hűség a helyi értékekhez”. Fő témája a Káposztásmegyer melletti természetes élőhelyek védelme. Bemutatásra került az elmúlt évek környezetvédelmi tevékenysége, az újpesti lakóközösség mozgósítása, és természetesen az elért eredmények.

A zsűri elnöke, Schlosser Tamás a National Geographic főszerkesztője angol nyelven tett fel a bemutatóval kapcsolatban kérdéseket, melyekre a gyerekek angolul válaszoltak.

A győztes csapatok támogatást kapnak a pályázatban vázolt elképzeléseik továbbfejlesztésére.

Csapatkép a döntőről:

A Volvo Autó Hungária hazai döntőről készült sajtóközleménye magyarul mutatja be a diákok projekt munkáját.

Loyal to local: wildlife of sandy hills in Budapest

The sandy dunes, sea buckthorn and other native species of the few remaining peat-ponds are being threatened by the expanding city of Budapest. Our goal is to spur local action with help of the local civil organisations protesting for the surviving ponds and to revitalize the habitat of the sea buckthorn. We are the Green Guards from Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Now enjoy a 3 dimension city tour. Please, put on your 3D glasses.

The marshy wildlife

The peat pond

Our team is from the Karinthy Frigyes ÁMK Primary School.

My name is Zsuzsanna Lőrincz, my name is Bernadett Hegedűs, my name is Olivér Hruska. Our teachers are: Anita Gánóczy and Maria Ocsenás.

The sea buckthorn used to be found everywhere in the country. Today the northern part of Budapest on the banks of the Danube is the only habitat of this national rarity. The precious sand swards living on the area give home to 22 protected plant species.

In our first project in 2008 we realised the destruction of the original wet, marshy land by the construction of the motorways. Some peat ponds have survived and great damages were caused in the sandy steppes.

The peat ponds are faced with the expanding construction of the nearby shopping centre.

New buildings and a parking area are planned to be built on the area of the ponds. Our goal is to stop the further urban extension, and to ensure the possibilities for local people to enjoy the last examples of the original wildlife.

The conservation organizations called for a public demonstration and press conference. We made an information board and leaflets for the wetland-saving demonstration.

Signatures were collected to a petition which contained a request to the Minister of Nature Reservation to examine the problem

Our main goal is to clean the Sea Buckthorn Reservation Area from the invading species and try to create other habitats in the surrounding area.

We organised a treating action on the sea buckthorn area with the Bird Life Hungary. A bird ringing action was displayed to the participants.

The next habitat treating action we also carried away the splits of the locust and aspen trees to a designated area. Our light gloves became dirty and black.

We have had an appeal published to the sea buckthorn treatment in the local newspaper. More than 100 volunteers participated in the preserving work. We succeeded to clean the area, so the sea buckthorn staff can expand.

We sprouted sea buckthorn seeds and they grew in humid and steamy environment. We planted out the sprouting seedlings in germinating pots.

In our school garden we planted 3 female and 1 male sea-buckthorn shrubs. We made an information board about its natural habitat and medical effect. We placed the board to the shrubs.

During the spring walking on the conservation area we saw a lot of interesting plants and animals which we determined with a help of a book.

On the habitat of sea buckthorn we found protected Needlegrass, Hungarian carnation, Alyssum and Cypress Spurge.

In spring and autumn we patrolled and collected invertebrate animals at the wetlands. The biologist of Eötvös University Dr György Kriska helped our project.

The wetlands provide natural habitat for the protected amphibians and tortoises. Approximately 50 spices of birds lay eggs in this territory.

Grey heron (Szürke gém)

Wild duck (Tőkés réce, vadkacsa)

We patrolled the areas in winter too.

The checking of the root scions and the continuous green guarding were our most important tasks.

We considered necessary to increase the numbers of the sea buckthorn shrubs in the forest near our school for their survival. The result of the sea buckthorn plantation is 3 female and 1 male shrubs.

The shopping centre near the peat ponds started an illegal tree cutting. We succeeded to stop it with the help of the civil organisations.

The same time the concrete blocks have disappeared at the roundabout and the number of the illegal waste dumping has increased on the protected area. The local government placed out traffic blockage pillars for the intercession of the civil organisations.

Thanked to our frequent green guards, we have found illegal dumped construction rubbish. We have collected one part of it. The government has had the waste delivered from the forest.

A false expert report was made about the peat ponds which determined that area is not a marsh. We participated on new official site visits which proved the existence of the marsh. The decision of the authorities prohibited every kind of construction on the protected area.

We participated in a „Professional Forum” where the scientists of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences gave presentations about the formation of the peat ponds, about their biology. We helped in the registration and greeting the guests.

We prepared with a presentation about the sea-buckthorn project for the 25 year jubilee of our school. On the spot of the “Environment Island” the students solved an environmental test. The visitors could taste free the sea-buckthorn syrup which was made from fruits.

We displayed our Volvo Adventure project on the Újpest City Days. We also participated on the Health and Running Day of the IV. District. We informed people about the Sea buckthorn treatment action by leaflets.

We have made interviews with the managers and colleagues of the local group of Bird Life Hungary, Dunakeszi Peat Pond Nature Protective Foundation, Air Nature Protective Adviser’s Office and the Danube-Ipoly National Park.

We made interview with the Mayor of Újpest, who helped our nature conservation activity. He ensured us about his contributing in our nature preserving work and participated in the 2011 sea buckthorn treatment action.

We made a photo composition on our information board in our school.

We presented our project-work on the „Local to Global” environmental exhibition.

The eco survey that we made with 185 students in our school has shown us that 70% of our students is excellent, 20% is adequate and 10% needs development in their environmental awareness.

We participated on a press conference in the Rex Dog Shelter Foundation, which was organised for saving the wetland. As a result the Minister of Nature Reservation has ordered the reviewing of the false expert report. We informed the local media about our project.

We wrote an article about our project in the local newspapers, internet forums, TV channels, radio stations and numerous magazines dealt with the theme.

Our treatment actions have helped to increase the number of sea buckthorn shrubs from 360 to 400. We have planted young female and male sea buckthorn shrubs, grown from root scions to another area, so we succeeded to enlarge the area. Due to the protesting actions and the new expert opinions, the authorities have stopped and prohibited the new constructions on the peat pond area. As a result of our patrol the natural wildlife can survive in the cleaned area. Our main goal is to continue the protection of the natural habitats in the surroundings of our school.

Please, put on your 3D glasses to enjoy our slide show about the wildlife in Budapest.
